History of Grama Panchayat

The historic Nedumkotta, which once marked the boundary between the old kingdoms of Thekkumkoor and Vadakkumkoor, passes through most of the wards of this Panchayat.

The ancient Ramamangalam Perumthrikkovil Temple traces its origins back to the reign of Cheraman Perumal. Historical traditions state that Cheraman Perumal, who is believed to have embraced Islam and traveled to Mecca, was responsible for the construction of this temple. Dedicated to Bala Narasimha, the temple was once a renowned center of music and temple arts, flourishing with great prestige and cultural significance.

Ramamangalam is also the birthplace of the celebrated musical genius Shatkala Govinda Marar, who earned fame throughout Tamil Nadu and the Telugu-speaking regions. Blessed with the rare ability to sing in six different tempos (Shatkala), he began his musical journeys from this land carrying his famous seven-stringed tambura. A contemporary of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, Govinda Marar later visited Thiruvaiyaru and met the legendary saint-composer Tyagaraja. According to South Indian musical history, Tyagaraja was deeply impressed by Govinda Marar's extraordinary musical prowess and, overwhelmed by his performance, sang the famous Sri Raga kriti "Endaro Mahanubhavulu."

Ramamangalam was also a thriving center for temple arts. The renowned percussion maestros known as the Pancha Govindans rose to great fame from this region. Many gifted practitioners of Sopana Sangeetham also lived and performed here.

Among the important Christian institutions in the area is the Ramamangalam St. Jacob's Knanaya Church, a Knanaya Jacobite Syrian church in northern Travancore with a history of more than 150 years.

The hilly region of Ooramana is home to several ancient places of worship, including:

  • Ooramana Temple
  • Kuzhimattom Church, established in AD 135
  • Galila Kunnu Church
  • Salvation Army Church
  • Tabor Church

The Subrahmanya Swamy Temple at Ooramana Siva Veli and the Valloor Sree Krishna Swamy Temple are among the oldest temples in the region.

The history of the Ooramana Mahavishnu Temple and Sastha Temple, believed in local tradition to have been constructed by supernatural beings (Bhuthathans), is closely intertwined with the history of the 72 Namboothiri households that once flourished in Ooramana and later declined. The mural paintings found within this temple complex provide valuable insights into mythology and history. Today, the complex is protected and preserved by the Archaeology Department.

The ancient cave shrine located on Ooramana Kodikuthi Mala is increasingly attracting public attention.

Ramamangalam is also associated with notable social reformers. Neelimangalam and Parvathi Kottaram, who campaigned against the Ghosha (veil or seclusion) tradition and polygamy among the Namboothiri community, hailed from this region. Another distinguished son of the soil was Vidwan R. Vasudevan Kartha, an early editorial board member of the Malayala Manorama newspaper and a respected literary figure.

The spirit of India's freedom movement also reached Ramamangalam. Prominent local leaders who participated in or supported the struggle included:

  • P. P. Raman Namboothiri
  • P. P. Narayanan Namboothiri
  • Kodiyattu Varghese
  • K. K. Mathai
  • M. P. Raman Namboothiri
  • V. P. Chacko
  • Kandakkott Yohannan
  • Thuruthel Paily

The implementation of land reform laws brought significant social and economic changes to Ramamangalam, enabling many tenant farmers to become landowners.

A notable chapter in the region's social history was the anti-liquor movement conducted at Ooramana under the leadership of the renowned Sarvodaya leader Prof. M. P. Manmathan. The movement attracted widespread participation from people of all ages and backgrounds, becoming a major mass campaign.

Ramamangalam is a land where people from different communities have long maintained strong bonds of friendship and mutual respect. The region, including Ramamangalam Panchayat, is blessed with a rich cultural heritage. It stands as an excellent example of Hindu-Christian communal harmony, and the spirit of cooperation and goodwill among its people continues to be exemplary.
